The Virago is the personal transport and assault vessel for Prince Xizor, the criminal Underlord of the Black Sun. Xizor rarely ventures from his fortified palace on the Imperial Centre (Coruscant), but when he does he uses the Virago to transport himself for those rare occasions when Black Sun affairs require his personal attention. Xizor contracted the entire MandalMotors design team to create this unique craft. The result that the design engineers came up with was the Virago, the first in the StarViper-class Assault Fighters. Prince Xizor has extravagant tastes, nothing but the best is good enough for him. After a few moments contemplating "his" extremely expensive prize he announced that he was satisfied.
Everything is co-ordinated through a state-of-the-art computer control system that integrates flight commands with the wing microthrusters and adjustable thrust nacelles on the main engines. The in-flight computer control system individually adjusts each mircothruster. The wing arrangement provides maximum manoeuvrability is space, however, they severely hamper atmospheric flight so they are normally retracted unless the Virago is in combat. In combat, the Virago's four wings fully fold out to give the manoeuvring thrusters maximum effect. The wings themselves hold reserve fuel cell racks and the forward faces of the wings are heavily armoured, so well that even the concentrated fire from an X-Wing doesn't stand much a chance of penetrating the armour. The rear of the fighter is not significantly armoured, however, its shield generators provide ample protection.
The MandalMotors designers
opted to make the StarViper a "mobile platform" ship. Unfortunately, the
Virago
can match the TIE Interceptor for speed and manoeuvrability despite its
far greater mass. All the systems aboard the Virago require an enormous
amount of energy to operate at maximum efficiency. Each generator supplies
its nearest wing and provides a quarter of the thrust for the main engines.
MandalMotors produced additional fighters based on the StarViper design,
while virtually identical in appearance, they are far less powerful than
the Virago.
